Historic Route 66
Historic Route 66 – Known both as America’s Main Street and The Mother Road, US Route 66 was initiated on November 11, 1926. This highway became one of the most famous roads in America, running from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, andCalifornia, before ending at Los Angeles, covering a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km). Today, preservation groups are working hard to restore remaining portions and landmarks of this great highway, while educating people of its significance and history. Route 66 runs east to west just north of Blackberry Creek Retreat Bed and Breakfast, through Marshfield and Northview. We have maps and videos regarding this great highway. We are members of The Route 66 Association of Missouri. |

Dawt Mill
Imagine you’ve time warped back to 1866, a new mill is being constructed on the North Fork. Just a few years later in 1874 Pres. Grant conveys a patent for the land at Dawt to Rhuma J Isom, who homesteaded it prior to that date; the origins of the name are still unknown. Perched high on a bank, just upstream from Tecumseh, this Mill remains much the same, with the rusted tin roofs and wood siding worn by winds of time… This is now a resort with restaurants and rooms to rent! (Directions from Ava, Mo: Turn left onto MO-5 South 29.4 mi, Turn left onto US-160 East, 10.9 mi, Turn left onto State Hwy PP, 1.2 mi, Turn left onto Co Rd 318, Destination will be on the left) |
Hodgson Water Mill
...a perfect 3 ½ story, historic grist mill located on Bryant Creek near Sycamore. Constructed around 1897, this timber frame mill building is covered with red-painted weatherboards, the quintessential picture of a perfect mill! Zanoni Mill
...It was founded in 1898 and was named for the novel Zanoni by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, a story I now want to read of love and occult aspirations. The mill was built in 1905 as an overshot wheel mill by "Doc" Morrison and restored by his grandson. Directions from Hodgson Water Mill: Head south on MO-181 S toward County Rd 331; 5.0 mi) about 19 minutes to Rockbridge Trout and Game Ranch Rockbridge Grist Mill
Rockbridge was founded in the 19th century by pioneer families from Marion County, Kentucky, led by Captain Kim Amyx, The community was named for a natural rock crossing at a nearby spring. It was the county seat, until it was burned during the Civil War. A new village grew up around the mill, built on the banks of Spring Creek in 1865. B. V. Morris bought and enlarged the mill in 1888. And in 1894, from the virgin pine forest, he built a two-story general store, considered one of the largest and finest in the Ozarks. It offered everything from hardware to food--including coffins. A bank building was added in 1904. And the rumor has it that Jesse James tried to rob that very bank (I doubt the story.... although it adds color, since Jesse James was assassinated in 1882)! Nevertheless, it is an amazing piece of history with its 2 foot thick walls. Directions from Zanoni: Head west on MO-181 S toward Co Rd 315, 2.0 mi; Turn right onto State Hwy N, 9.7 mi; Turn left onto Co Rd 142/Co Rd 143, 266 ft; Turn right to stay on Co Rd 142/Co Rd 143, 0.3 mi; Turn right to stay on Co Rd 142/Co Rd 143 Destination will be on the right 105 ft. They are a community of monks of the Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance, popularly known as Trappists.Trappist Monks first came to Ava, Missouri from New Melleray Abbey in Iowa in 1950 to establish a monastic life here. The peaceful Abbey is situated in the rugged, wooded Ozarks with clear streams, and a small river flowing thru the hills. Perched on a cliff above the river, Topaz Mill is the crowning jewel of a mill preserved in all aspects by owner Joe Bob O’Neal. He is excited about the past and can point out where the different stores were, and how his grandpa took care of the old mill. It is perhaps the most difficult to find, but is well worth the effort! Although dust and cobwebs have made their home, it has an authenticity which is ageless. In the General Store he has now housed a museum... One of kind items, like a folded bed hidden behind beautiful carvings topped with a beveled mirror and antique wind-up toys... my husband was intrigued by giant ax handles and hammer handles that only Paul Bunyan could have held for their size.
