Middle Ages Art

Middle Age artists were predominantly priests and monks who lived in monasteries.  The later Middle Ages artists came from varying  walks of life   Gothic Art  emerged later  pioneered by several great artists during that period.  It was during this period that artists broke away from the influences of the Byzantium art style. Thus it developed into the visual art of the Gothic and Middle Ages

It was the Medieval artists, sculptors and painters who were founders of a movement towards realism which culminated in the Renaissance art style (with artists like Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci).

Medieval Architecture

• Religious Cathedrals were built on the Latin Cross floor plan with a nave, transepts and alter

• Military Castles served as defense.  They had  fortified walls where crossbowmen shot at invaders from cross shaped windows.  Soldiers were able to seek shelter behind crenelated battlements.

• Civil Homes  Half timbered​ Jettying (the upper story project beyond the lower building)
• Pre Romanesque
